Rephrase so the opening answers the question directly without any invented figure: "How long combo brows last varies from person to person: they are designed to be long-lasting, but they gradually soften rather than staying unchanged forever." How long they look fresh depends on your skin type, sun exposure, lifestyle, skincare, aftercare and the original application. I assess the healed result before recommending whether or when a refresh is appropriate.
What are combo brows, and why do they fade?
When clients ask me how long combo brows last, I first explain what the treatment involves. Combo brows, also called combination brows, bring together delicate hairstrokes at the front of the brow with soft shading through the body and tail.
The hairstrokes create a lighter, more feathered beginning, while the shading gives the rest of the brow definition and the appearance of greater density. The design can be kept soft or made more defined, depending on your preferences, natural brow hair, skin and what I believe will heal well.
This is permanent makeup, not a temporary brow tint. Pigment is placed into the upper layers of the skin, so it does not simply wash away with cleansing. However, skin naturally renews itself, and the colour gradually becomes softer. Permanent makeup should therefore be understood as long-lasting rather than completely unchanged for life.
What affects how long combo brows last?
There is no single lifespan that applies to every client. During consultation, I consider factors that can affect how quickly the pigment changes in appearance.
- Skin type: oilier skin can make fine hairstrokes soften or become less crisp over time, while the shaded areas may remain more visually stable.
- Sun exposure: regular unprotected exposure can contribute to faster fading.
- Skincare: products or treatments that increase exfoliation around the brows may affect how the colour is maintained.
- Lifestyle: factors such as frequent sweating and your general routine can influence the result.
- Aftercare: following the advice given for healing helps protect the initial result.
- Original application: pigment choice, placement, skin condition and the balance between hairstrokes and shading all matter.
These factors are why I avoid promising an exact number of years. Two people can have the same treatment and notice their brows changing at different rates.

What will combo brows look like after two years?
Clients often ask what combo brows look like after two years, because they want to know whether the result will still look natural. By then, the colour may have softened, and the hairstrokes may be less distinct than they were when fully healed. The shaded body and tail may still provide useful definition.
That does not automatically mean you need another treatment. I look at the healed colour, shape, symmetry, skin and remaining natural brow hair before discussing maintenance. A refresh is considered when the existing work has softened enough that the overall result no longer gives you the definition you want.
It is also important not to judge the final appearance too soon. Permanent makeup healing takes place over several weeks. Brows can initially look darker or stronger before they soften, so I do not recommend making decisions based only on the first days after treatment.
When might you need a combo brow top-up?
A top-up or refresh is not automatically due on a fixed date. I base that conversation on how your healed brows look and whether there is enough space for additional pigment. Adding more colour too frequently can create an unnecessarily saturated appearance, so waiting until maintenance is genuinely needed is important.
Your usual makeup style is relevant too. Someone who prefers a very soft, barely-there brow may want a refresh at a different point from someone who likes stronger definition. Existing pigment, changes in natural brow hair and any previous brow tattooing also need to be assessed before I plan further work.
If you have old permanent makeup from elsewhere, please tell me before booking. Previous pigment can affect the colour, shape and healed appearance of new work. In some cases, removal or lightening may need to be discussed first. You can read about my PMU brow removal service if this applies to you.
How can you help your combo brows last well?
Good aftercare starts with following the specific instructions I give you. During healing, avoid picking or scratching the area and be careful with water, sweat and products around the brows. The skin needs time to settle, and the early appearance is not a reliable guide to the final healed colour.
Once healed, protecting the brows from regular sun exposure is sensible. Be cautious with exfoliating products and treatments near the area, as faster skin renewal can contribute to the pigment becoming softer sooner. Your normal skincare routine should be discussed during consultation if it includes active or resurfacing products.
Keep realistic expectations about the style as well. Combo brows create a cosmetic appearance of fuller, more structured brows. They do not grow new brow hair, and the hairstrokes will not remain identical forever. A natural result is one that ages gradually and can be reviewed rather than repeatedly overworked.
Are combo brows suitable for everyone?
Not necessarily. I need to discuss your skin type, lifestyle, medical history, allergies, sensitivity, previous reactions and expectations before proceeding. Please tell me about relevant medication, skin conditions and any earlier brow treatments.
Sensitivity does not automatically rule out treatment, and numbing is used, but an irritated or inflamed brow area should be assessed before booking treatment. Please tell me if you are prone to keloid scarring, as this needs to be assessed before any cosmetic tattoo procedure. A proper consultation allows me to identify concerns and explain what may be realistic for your skin.
I also recommend reviewing healed examples, not only freshly completed brows. Healed work gives a more useful idea of how hairstrokes, shading and colour can settle. My approach is to agree the shape and level of definition with you before treatment, then make a careful plan around your features and existing brows.
I work from Tollerton, York, and I am happy to discuss your brow history and expectations before you decide. If you would like to ask about suitability, you can contact Dagna Courtman PMU & Beauty.
If you are comparing brow options, my guide to ombre brow longevity and top-up planning may also help if you are comparing how brow finishes are maintained over time.
Frequently asked questions
Do combo brows fade completely?
Combo brows gradually become lighter and softer as the skin renews itself, but they do not always disappear completely on their own. How much pigment remains varies with the original application, skin type, skincare and sun exposure. I assess existing colour before considering a refresh, correction or removal plan.
Can I have combo brows if my skin is oily?
Possibly, but oily skin can affect how fine hairstrokes heal. They may soften or become less crisp over time, while the shaded areas can provide more stable definition. I assess your skin and existing brow hair first, then explain what balance of hairstrokes and shading is realistic.
Will sunbeds affect my combo brows?
Regular ultraviolet exposure can contribute to faster fading and changes in colour. Protecting the brow area from the sun once healed is sensible, and you should follow any specific aftercare advice given after treatment. If you use sunbeds or spend substantial time outdoors, mention this during consultation.
Can I use skincare products over combo brows?
You may need to adjust products used directly around the brows, particularly exfoliating or resurfacing products. During the healing period, follow the aftercare instructions provided rather than applying products at random. Once healed, discuss active skincare with me if you are unsure whether it could affect longevity.
Are combo brows permanent or semi-permanent?
Combo brows are a permanent makeup treatment intended to last for a long time, but the visible colour and definition change gradually. They are not expected to remain identical forever. A later refresh may be wanted, and existing pigment can also be assessed for lightening or removal if circumstances change.
Can combo brows be corrected if the colour changes?
Sometimes, but the answer depends on the existing colour, shape, depth, skin and how much pigment remains. I would not recommend placing new pigment over old work without first assessing it. If the previous design is too strong or unsuitable, lightening or removal may need consideration.
Do combo brows replace the need for brow makeup?
They can reduce the amount of brow makeup some clients choose to use, but they do not guarantee that you will never want makeup again. Your preferred level of definition, fading over time and natural brow hair all make a difference. Some clients still add makeup for a stronger occasion look.
